Welcome to my blog! My name is Andrew, and I'm a Montana native, born and raised in Butte. It's a small town with a rich history but living here as an openly gay man isn't always easy. Yet here I am. My coming out story began on January 21st, 2012, at a local bar in Butte during what was supposed to be a fun night out with friends. I've always known I was different from other guys since a young age. Though I knew, and probably others did too, it was a secret I kept well hidden.
That night in January started like any other, with a round of drinks and good times. I never worried too much about hiding my sexuality; I just tried to blend in as the "straight guy," not realizing I wasn't very convincing. My best friend and I were at the bar with her high school classmate and her boyfriend. As the night went on, her boyfriend asked me the loaded question: "Are you gay?" This wasn't how I wanted to discuss my sexuality. It's been 12 years, so some details may have faded, but the public outing was distressing. I remember denying it when asked if I was gay, which dampened the night's fun. I felt vulnerable and exposed, uncertain about what to do with this secret I'd kept for so long. It was time to accept who I was.
Thank you for reading my first blog post. Over the next few weeks, I'll share more about the years following my coming out. I hope you'll continue to read and follow my journey towards acceptance and truth. Happy Pride Month!
